St.Helens Council wins top Government awards

St.Helens Council and its Local Strategic partners have scooped two major national Beacon Scheme awards in the ‘local government Oscars’ that recognise excellence.

Working alongside Helena Partnership and Arena Housing, the Council was awarded Beacon Status for the Homes for the Future award and in partnership with St.Helens Chamber  won the Raising Economic Prosperity Through Partnership award.  St.Helens and Lancashire County Council were the only Councils from a shortlist of 62 to win more than one award outright.
Communities Minister Sadiq Khan, who presented the awards at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, London, said:  “My congratulations go out to St.Helens Council. The Beacons are about showcasing the very best in service delivery.  St.Helens Council is among the top performers in their field, setting the standard for innovation, service excellence and improvement."

The judges praised the Council and LSP for the way they had used housing to help transform the Borough and said that the development team’s approach to their work had driven up the quality of planning applications and the service to developers - sending out a powerful message to Councils who fail to do so.  They said St.Helens is providing high quality, aspirational homes.

St.Helens was judged to be second to none in its ability to deliver regeneration projects successfully, including the LEGI programme which created over 800 jobs in its first year.  And the
Council and Chamber of Commerce were applauded for the way they tackled unemployment which was once high and is now the lowest on Merseyside.  The ambitious ‘Dream’ public art project was also singled out for the way it had involved the local community.

Council Chief Executive Carole Hudson said:  “We are delighted to have won these awards.  It is a great achievement and reflects upon our dedicated staff.  Working alongside our partners has again shown how we can deliver quality services.
